Dick’s Sporting Goods: The scorecard on ScoreCard

DICK’S Sporting Goods has been flexing its retail muscles lately—with rising revenues and over 850 stores across the U.S., including Golf Galaxy and Public Lands. It’s a one-stop shop for anyone who wants to gear up the entire family, whether you're chasing gains in the gym or chasing your kid across a soccer field. With so much on offer, it’s easy to drop a small fortune here.

Naturally, we wanted to know: does their loyalty program, ScoreCard, deliver as much value as the stores themselves? Or is it just another shiny membership card collecting dust in your app?

How you earn:

Joining ScoreCard is free and thankfully pretty straightforward. Here's the breakdown:

  • Points: You earn 1 point for every $1 spent across all DICK’S family of brands.

  • Rewards: Rack up 300 points and you’ll get a $10 reward.

  • Gold Status: Spend $500 in a calendar year and get upgraded to ScoreCard Gold. Perks include:

    • One (yes, just one) day of your choosing to earn triple points.

    • An extra $10 reward annually.

    • Gold-only offers and a VIP-ish customer service line.

All members also get:

  • Free shipping on orders $49+

  • Access to exclusive member offers

But the surprise MVP of earning?  The MOVE feature in the DICK’S mobile app. Connect your fitness tracker (Apple Health, Fitbit, or Garmin) and you can earn 3 extra points a day just for moving—either 10,000 steps, 3 miles, or 30 minutes of activity. That’s basically getting rewarded for not being in a coma. (Forward is a pace, folks.)

Another nice touch: you can link your Nike membership to the DICK’S app, creating a rare moment of corporate synergy where programs actually play nice together instead of competing.

(They also have a co-branded Mastercard with extra perks, but we’re sticking to the free non-card program today in our review.)

how you redeem:

Every 300 points automatically becomes a $10 reward... whether you’re ready for it or not. And here’s where things start feeling like a time warp:

  • Expiration: Rewards expire 45 days after they're issued. Use it or lose it.

  • Delivery Options: Real time in the DICK’s mobile app.  But if you opt into eRewards, it takes about 8 days to get the reward via email. Otherwise, it’s mailed—yes, snail-mailed—and takes up to 60 days to arrive. Who has time for that? It’s 2025, not 2005.

Other redemption annoyances:

  • Redemption Limits: Only 2 rewards per online transaction ($20) or 3 in-store ($30). So no mega-haul redemptions.

  • Returns: If you return an item bought with a reward, that reward is gone forever. Poof. No credit, no reissue. Ouch.

 What’s the Value?

(Note: by “return value” we mean how much are you save relative to how much you had to spend to earn it. For example, if you spent $100 to earn enough points to redeem $10, that’s a 10% return value).

 ScoreCard Base Members:

If you only earn via spending, your return maxes out at 3.33%. Not terrible, but not the golden 5% we like to see from big-box retailers. And since it converts at just 300 points, spend between $301 and $599 gives you nothing until you hit the next threshold.

If you add the MOVE points—earning 1,095 points annually—you can unlock $30 more in rewards, pushing your return value up to 10%+. That’s impressive for a free program… if you remember to walk and mark it as activity.

Gold looks shinier:

  • Your annual $10 bonus helps.

  • The one-day triple points event? That can net you 10% back on a single day’s purchases. Choose wisely!

  • Combine the first two bullets with MOVE points and $500 in annual spend, and you could rake in $90 in rewards. That’s a potential 18% return value—which is very rewarding territory.

🕵️‍♂️ ANY Fine Print?

Unfortunately, yes—and it's a bit of a buzzkill.

  •  Slow Timing: Rewards can take over a week to show up, and it might take up to 90 days to get your Gold status after qualifying. This makes the tech feel older than your childhood baseball glove.

  • Short Expiration: 45 days to use your reward means you’d better be a frequent shopper—or risk losing out.

  • Redemption Caps: Only 2–3 rewards can be redeemed per transaction.

  • No Promo Stacking: That triple points day? Can’t be combined with other promos.

  • No Reward Refunds: Return something bought with a reward and the reward isn’t returned.

  • Point Expiration: Points vanish 12 months after being earned if not redeemed.

  • Earning Cap: You can only earn up to $500 in rewards per month. Not a huge concern unless you're equipping an entire high school football team.

THE VERDICT:

What we like:

  • The program is simple and easy to join.

  • The MOVE points are a creative way to reward daily activity and easy way to earn up to 3 additional rewards annually.

 What we don’t love:

  • The rigid expiration windows and redemption rules.

  • The outdated delays and lack of reward flexibility.

  • The fact that you don’t control when rewards are issued (and then have to race against the clock to use them).

If you're a casual shopper? You might feel Robbed—especially if rewards expire before you return.

But if you’re a regular spender and take advantage of MOVE points and that triple point day, there’s real value here. For those members, DICK’S ScoreCard is Rewarded.

Rewarded or Robbed?

Gold Members with MOVE: REWARDED!
Base Members: Likely to feel 🚫 ROBBED!
