Pump, Earn, Repeat: How Exxon Mobil Rewards+ Stacks Up
Last month, we reviewed Shell Fuel Rewards and found a robust, generous program that gave drivers real savings at the pump. This month, we’re taking a look at Exxon Mobil to see how its program stacks up. We’re happy to report: it’s another solid option. It’s not quite as rich as Shell’s (we’ll get into why), but still a worthwhile pick for any frequent driver (at least until someone invents teleportation, which frankly feels overdue).

How it works:
Exxon Mobil Rewards+ allows you to earn points across three areas:
· Fuel – Over 12,000 stations nationwide
· Convenience stores & car washes locations on site– Exact number not specified (we looked)
To join, sign up at Exxon’s website or download the Exxon Mobil Rewards+ app. Registration requires your phone number, email, a password, and a 4-digit PIN. At the pump or store, you can pay with the app, or enter your PIN and phone number manually.
You can request a physical card... but it takes four weeks to arrive. And it’s 2025. Save a tree.🌲
Now, Let’s talk Points
Here’s where things get needlessly confusing. Exxon sometimes markets earnings as “cents per gallon,” which then convert into points. That’s clunky. So we’re simplifying it for everyone: we’re using points earned per gallon. You’re welcome.
· 100 points = $1 off (redeemable at the pump or in-store)
⛽ Fuel:
· Regular fuel = 3 points per gallon
· Synergy Supreme+ premium fuel = 6 points per gallon
🏪 C-Store & Car Washes:
· 2 points per dollar spent
Boosting Your Earnings (Yes, They Stack!)
Frequent Filler: ⛽
Earn +1 extra point per gallon once you purchase 100+ gallons of Synergy fuel in a month. Status lasts through the end of the next month.
AARP Members: 👴🏻
Get a 500-point signup bonus ($5 value), plus +1 point per gallon and +1 point per dollar spent in-store. Finally, a real perk for the 50+ crowd!
Birthday Bonus: 🎂
Earn 100 bonus points when you make a purchase during your birthday month. Easy peasy.
Refer-a-Friend: 🤝🏻
Earn 100 bonus points for every friend you refer. Loyalty pyramid scheme? Not quite, but we’re here for it.
All in, your earnings can climb to 8 points per gallon at the pump and 5 points per dollar in the convenience store. Not bad.
How you Redeem:
Redemption is just as easy as earning. Use your phone number and 4-digit PIN at the pump or register, or pay via the app or physical card.
You can choose when to redeem your points, though there’s a $50 (or 5,000 points) cap per transaction which seems fair.
Points don’t expire until December 31 of the year after you earned them, meaning you’ve got anywhere from 12 to 24 months to use them. Feel generous and we like it.
what’s the value?
Time for the math (don’t worry, we did it for you).
Fuel prices vary across the country (shoutout to Mississippi for the cheap gas, condolences to California), but for this analysis, we assumed:
· Regular fuel = $3/gallon
· Premium fuel = $4/gallon
· C-store spend = $25/month
We calculate “return value” as the percentage back based on your spend.
Example: earn $10 from $100 in purchases = 10% return value
Most fuel rewards programs hover around a 1% return due to gas being a low-margin business. But Exxon Mobil does a bit better here.
· Fuel-only return: Starts at 1%, and can climb to 2% if you’re a Frequent Filler, use premium fuel, and have AARP (a rare combo, but not impossible).
· C-store return: Up to 0.5% more if you’re spending monthly.
· Bonus perks: Toss in birthday rewards and referrals, and you’ll squeak out a few more bucks per year.
Fuel programs are not the holy grail of loyalty savings but this progam does allow to squeak out decent earnings on something you absolutely have to buy anyway.

How Does It Compare to Shell?
Shell’s Silver and Gold members earn at rates similar to Exxon Mobil Rewards+ members. But Shell’s Platinum tier unlocks 10 cents back per gallon, which translates to a return value of over 3%—a full percentage point higher than what Exxon offers. So, if you're a very frequent driver with a large tank, Shell will deliver more meaningful savings.
That said, for regular drivers, there isn’t a huge gap when looking at fuel purchases alone. Both programs offer boosted earnings for spending inside the store, so which one’s “better” may ultimately come down to how much you engage beyond the pump.
🕵️♂️ Fine Print (a.k.a. "Huh? What Now?")
Some of these rules are due to state laws, others are just... odd:
No points on lottery tickets
No point redemption at the pump if you use Apple Pay
ExxonMobil debit/credit cards don’t stack with Rewards+, they're a separate discount and program
Alcohol? Tobacco? Milk?
No points on alcohol in 19 states
No points on tobacco in 7 states
No points on milk in 3 states. Yes, milk🥛 . Shame on you Pennsylvania, Maine, and Massachusetts (our home state. We’re embarrassed).
OUR VERDICT:
Exxon Mobil Rewards+ is a solid program with good return value allowing stackable benefits to boost earnings. It won’t blow your budget wide open with savings, but no gas program does. But being able to save over $100 annualy for a commodity like gas is a win in our book.
